About Us

In 2009 we came together as a group of volunteers all with a background of pet-ownership and some in a Veterinary profession. In one way or another we had all become aware that there are a vast number of unwanted (stray, abandoned or even mistreated) cats and kittens in our local area on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria (Australia).

Wondering what we could do to be part of the solution, we decided to band together, forming our non-for-profit organisation ‘Rescue A Cat Inc.'. Through R.A.C.I. we actively promote not only responsible cat ownership, but also have set up a network of foster carers. Through our team effort we are able to rescue many cats and kittens that would otherwise be euthanized. The cats and kittens in our care are de-sexed, vaccinated, micro-chipped and wormed before we send them to loving permanent homes. By doing so we are breaking the cycle of over-breeding of unwanted cats and kittens. Un-de-sexed and non-micro-chipped cats that are impounded or abandoned and left to fend for themselves all add to the feral cat community where they will continue to breed adding to the problem we currently have on the Mornington Peninsula, the whole of Victoria, and Australia wide.

All animal pounds and shelters are inundated with cats and kittens throughout the year. Unfortunately there aren't as many new adoption families as there are cats, which means the majority of these perfectly healthy and very friendly cats and kittens are euthanized as a result. Our aim is to rescue as many cats and kittens as possible and place them in foster homes where they will live in a family environment, rather than in shelter cages. Here they can become accustomed to family life, ready for their new permanent adoption home. We can usually match a cat or kitten to your lifestyle as our foster-carers will be familiar their temperament, their likes and dislikes, helping to make a smooth transition into their new homes.

Dedication To Diane

Our dear friend and committee member Diane passed away on February 13 2012.

As co-founding member, Di set up the legal and administrative structure of the group, and dedicated much of her precious spare time to the running of RACI whilst also looking after numerous unwanted cats and kittens in her own home.  In her initial role of Treasurer, and later Secretary, Di methodically and meticulously looked after much of the administrative paperwork involved. With her attention to detail, wit and practical approach Di was an invaluable member of our group and always kept us on track to ensure the smooth sailing of team RACI. Her passing leaves a huge void. Di was a friend to all and her genuine compassion, humanity and good humour made everyone feel cared for. The world is a better place because she was in it.

Di: we miss you.  You will always be a part of team RACI.
